Your questions

Your Vhi cover questions, answered

Does Vhi actually cover counselling?

You“I have Vhi through work but I’ve never checked what my mental health cover actually looks like.”
Fettle concierge“Let’s find out — most Vhi plans include some level of out-patient cover for counselling and psychotherapy.”

Vhi offers cover for counselling and psychotherapy as part of its out-patient benefits on many plans, alongside broader mental health supports.

Which therapists qualify for cover?

You“Does my therapist need a particular qualification for Vhi to pay out?”
Fettle concierge“Yes — Vhi recognises specific accrediting bodies, and every Fettle therapist meets one of them.”

Vhi recognises therapists accredited with IACP, ICP, or PSI. Every therapist you’re matched with through Fettle holds one of these accreditations.

How much of my cover is left, and is there an excess?

You“I don’t want to start therapy and then find out I’m near my limit.”
Fettle concierge“That’s exactly why we point people to ‘Check my benefits’ in MyVhi before booking ongoing sessions.”

Annual limits and any excess are set by your individual plan, not by Vhi as a whole. MyVhi’s ‘Check my benefits’ section shows your remaining allowance.

How do I actually claim the money back?

You“Once I’ve had my session, what do I actually need to do?”
Fettle concierge“Fettle automatically sends you a receipt with everything Vhi needs — from there, Snap & Send takes a couple of minutes.”

Vhi’s Snap & Send feature, in MyVhi or the Vhi App, lets you claim in four steps: log in, upload the receipt we’ve already emailed you, fill in a short form, then review and submit.

Does online therapy with Fettle count for cover?

You“All my sessions would be online — does that still count?”
Fettle concierge“Cover is based on your therapist’s accreditation, not on whether the session happens online or in person.”

Because Vhi’s cover criteria centre on the practitioner’s accreditation, online sessions with an accredited Fettle therapist follow the same claims process as in-person ones.

What if I need more general mental health support too?

You“I’ve seen Vhi has other mental health resources — how does that fit in?”
Fettle concierge“Those are great complementary supports — think of them alongside regular therapy, not instead of it.”

Vhi provides broader mental health resources and guidance for members alongside counselling cover. For ongoing, structured work with a dedicated therapist, that’s what booking through Fettle is for.

Worth knowing

4 things to check on your Vhi plan

Two minutes in MyVhi can save you a surprise later.

  • Which practitioners are covered

Vhi recognises therapists accredited with IACP, ICP, or PSI. Confirming your therapist’s accreditation avoids surprises at claim time.

  • How many sessions are covered

Annual session or spend limits vary by plan. ‘Check my benefits’ in MyVhi shows what you have left for the year.

  • Whether there’s an excess

Some Vhi plans apply an excess per claim or per year. Check this in your Table of Benefits to avoid surprises.

  • Whether pre-authorisation is needed

Most out-patient counselling claims don’t need pre-approval, but it’s worth confirming for extended courses of treatment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about using your Vhi cover with Fettle.

Does Vhi cover counselling?

Yes — many Vhi plans include cover for counselling and psychotherapy as part of out-patient benefits, though the exact level depends on your specific plan and scheme. Check ‘Check my benefits’ in MyVhi, or your Table of Benefits, to see your exact entitlement before booking.

Which therapists does Vhi accept?

Vhi recognises therapists accredited with IACP, ICP, or PSI for counselling, psychotherapy, and psychology cover. Every therapist matched to you through Fettle already meets one of these accreditation standards.

How do I check my Vhi cover?

Log into MyVhi (web or app) and go to ‘Check my benefits’, or review your Table of Benefits document. This shows your annual counselling allowance, any excess that applies, and which services are included on your plan.

How do I claim back a counselling session from Vhi?

Pay for your session directly. Fettle then automatically sends you a receipt by email, which you upload through Snap & Send in MyVhi or the Vhi App, alongside a short form with treatment details, then submit for review.

Is online counselling covered by Vhi?

Cover is generally based on your therapist’s accreditation rather than whether a session happens online or in person, so sessions with an accredited Fettle therapist follow the same Snap & Send claims process.

What information does my receipt need for a Vhi claim?

Your name, the date of treatment, the treatment provided, and your practitioner’s name and accreditation details are all required. Every receipt Fettle issues after a session automatically includes all of this.

What if my claim is declined?

It’s usually a documentation issue rather than a cover issue — for example, a missing accreditation number or unclear treatment date. Contact Vhi directly, and Fettle’s concierge team can help make sure future receipts include everything needed.

Is there a limit to how many sessions Vhi will cover?

Annual limits vary by plan, so there’s no single answer that applies to every Vhi member. ‘Check my benefits’ in MyVhi shows your specific allowance, worth checking before starting an extended course of therapy.

How much of my counselling cost will Vhi cover?

This depends on your individual plan rather than one company-wide rate — Vhi has many different levels of cover, and out-patient allowances for counselling and psychotherapy vary accordingly. Check ‘Check my benefits’ in MyVhi or call Vhi’s member line directly.

What’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy cover with Vhi?

Vhi generally applies its out-patient mental health cover to both counselling and psychotherapy, provided the practitioner holds a recognised accreditation — IACP, ICP, or PSI. What matters most is your practitioner’s accreditation and title rather than the specific label used.

Can I use my Vhi cover for a family member’s therapy?

Family and dependant cover depends on your specific plan — some Vhi plans extend counselling cover to a partner or children included on the policy, others don’t. Check your Table of Benefits or MyVhi to see who’s covered.

What if I switch health insurer during a course of therapy?

If you move from Vhi to a different insurer partway through therapy, your new insurer’s accreditation requirements and claims process will apply to sessions from that point on. Check these before your first session with the new provider.
