Some routes to online therapy in Ireland, including the HSE's SilverCloud programme, need a GP or primary care referral before you can start. The referral itself, not what happens after it, is usually the slow part. Fettle works differently. You don't need a GP letter, a referral form or anyone's sign-off. You choose an accredited therapist, pick a time that suits you, and start, often within a day or two.
No GP referral. No waiting list. Book directly.
How Self-Referral Works at Fettle:
Self-referral simply means you refer yourself. There is no doctor's appointment to book first, no ten-minute consultation where you have to explain how you're feeling, and no waiting for a form to be processed. You come straight to us, and the whole process is built to take minutes rather than weeks.
There are two ways to start, and both are open to anyone in Ireland aged 18 and over (with separate youth and couples services if you need them).
Option 1: Browse and Book Yourself:
Answer four quick questions about what you'd like help with, such as anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties or work stress, along with whether you have private health insurance. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to create an account first. You'll then see two or three accredited therapists matched to what you've told us. Each profile shows their qualifications and accreditation, the areas they specialise in, their price, and their live calendar. Pick the therapist you like, choose a slot, and confirm. That's it.
If you'd rather look through everyone first, you can browse all of our therapists and book directly from any profile.
Option 2: Get Matched on a Free Call:
If you'd prefer to talk to a person before choosing, you can book a free 20-minute consultation with one of our matching specialists. It happens over video or phone, whichever you prefer. They'll listen to what's going on for you, check what your health insurance covers, explain how tax relief on therapy works, and recommend a therapist who fits. There's no obligation to book afterwards.
How Quickly You Can Start:
Matching typically takes between 24 and 72 hours, and many clients have their first session within 24 hours of booking. Sessions run seven days a week, with morning, evening and weekend slots, so you can fit therapy around work, college or family rather than the other way around. Everything happens over secure video from wherever you are in Ireland.
Why Accreditation Matters When You Self-Refer:
When there's no GP in the middle checking who you're being sent to, the platform has to do that checking instead. Every therapist on Fettle is accredited or pre-accredited with a recognised professional body: the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) or the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). Some hold accreditation with bodies such as IAHIP, BACP, NAPCP or APCP as well.
In practice, that means your therapist has completed an accredited degree or postgraduate qualification, logged hundreds of hours of supervised clinical practice before qualifying, attends ongoing clinical supervision, is bound by a professional code of ethics, holds professional indemnity insurance and is Garda vetted. Because the titles "counsellor" and "psychotherapist" aren't yet legally protected in Ireland, professional body accreditation is the most reliable way to know you're in safe hands. You'll see each therapist's accreditation on their profile before you book.
Is Self-Referral Right for You?
Being honest, self-referral isn't automatically the better option for everyone. If you're already under the care of your GP, there's no particular urgency, and a free public route is available to you, that may serve you well. If you're in crisis, or you need medication reviewed, your GP or emergency services are the right first call.
Self-referral is the direct route if any of the following sound like you:
- You want to start now, before things build up further, rather than waiting on an appointment and then a referral.
- You don't have a regular GP, or getting an appointment is difficult where you live.
- You'd rather not have a conversation about your mental health with your family doctor first.
- You want to choose your own therapist and the kind of therapy you get, whether that's CBT, ACT, psychodynamic or humanistic work, rather than being assigned to whoever is available.
- You want sessions at times that work for you, including evenings and weekends.
If you're unsure whether therapy is what you need, or which kind, the free consultation exists for exactly that question. You can also read our guide to which type of therapy is right for you.
Pricing:
Individual therapy for adults starts from €85 per 50-minute session. You can pay as you go, or save with a bundle if you plan to keep going: a three-session bundle is €271.50 (€90.50 per session), six sessions are €528 (€88 per session), and nine sessions are €765 (€85 per session). Youth therapy for 12 to 17 year olds is €125 for a single 60-minute session or from €108.33 per session in a bundle. Couples therapy is €135 for a single 60-minute session or €115 per session in a bundle. Assessments for anxiety, depression and OCD are €89 for a 30-minute consultation with a psychologist. Full details are on our pricing page.
Claiming on Your Health Insurance:
Most Vhi, Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health plans include some outpatient cover for counselling and psychotherapy, and members commonly claim back between €40 and €60 per session depending on their plan. You pay Fettle directly for the session, and we send you an itemised receipt straight afterwards with your therapist's professional body registration details on it. You then submit that receipt through your insurer's app or online portal. Our insurance page explains what each insurer typically covers, and our matching specialists can check your specific plan on the free consultation call.
Whatever isn't reimbursed by insurance may qualify for tax relief. Revenue allows you to claim 20% back on eligible unreimbursed health expenses, and therapy with a registered practitioner can qualify. You submit your receipts through Revenue's myAccount at the end of the year.
Start Today:
You don't need a referral, a letter or a reason that feels "serious enough". If you'd like to talk to someone, you can browse our accredited therapists and book a session now, or book a free 20-minute consultation and let us find the right match for you.
